How to check a business idea before you spend money

Many new businesses struggle for one simple reason: not enough people want to pay for them. The good news is that you can test this before you spend real money. Here is a simple way to do it, in seven steps.

The 7 steps

  1. 1

Write the idea in one sentence

Use this shape: "I help [who] with [problem] by [what I do], and they pay [how]." If you can’t fill in every part, that part is what you need to find out first.

  2. 2

Name exactly who has the problem

"Everyone" is not a customer. "Parents of small children in Tampere who work shifts" is. The more exact you are, the easier it is to find them and talk to them.

  3. 3

Look at what they use today

People already solve the problem somehow: another company, a spreadsheet, paper, a friend, or doing nothing. Write these down and find what they cost. Competitors are not bad news. They show that people pay for this.

  4. 4

    Do the money sum

Add up your monthly costs. Work out what you keep from one sale. Divide the first by the second. That is how many sales you need each month just to cover your costs.

  5. 5

    Check the rules

Most businesses need some of these: registration, permits, tax, insurance and rules for customer data. Ask your local business advice service or an accountant. In Finland, for example, the regional enterprise agencies (uusyrityskeskus) give free advice to new founders.

  6. 6

Talk to 10 people about their problem

Not about your idea. Ask about real things that already happened. People are kind about ideas, but honest about their own lives.

  7. 7

Run one cheap test this week

For example a one-page website with a sign-up button, a pre-order, a post in a local group, or doing the service by hand for one customer. Decide before you start what result counts as "it worked".

The money sum, with an example

Example with made-up numbers

  • Monthly costs: €600
  • You charge €12 per sale. Each sale costs you €4 in materials.
  • You keep €8 per sale.
  • €600 ÷ €8 = 75 sales a month.
  • If you work 25 days a month, that is 3 sales every day, just to cover costs.

Then ask yourself: can I really get 3 sales a day? From where?

This one sum often decides more than any business plan. If the number of sales you need looks impossible, change the price, the costs or the idea before you start.

Questions to ask the 10 people

  • Tell me about the last time this was a problem for you.
  • What do you do about it now?
  • What does that cost you, in money or time?
  • What have you tried before? What happened?
  • Who else should I talk to about this?

Avoid "Would you buy this?" and "Do you like my idea?". Most people say yes to be nice, and then don’t buy. Ask what they did last time instead.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Building the product or the website before anyone has said they want it.
  • Asking only friends and family. They want to be kind to you.
  • Counting likes and nice comments. Count sign-ups, pre-orders and payments.
  • Spending on a logo, a brand or an app before the first sale.
  • Skipping the money sum because the idea "feels right".

Go, change or stop

After your talks and your test, decide. Go if people pay or sign up. Change the idea if people have the problem but don’t like your answer to it. Stop if nobody has the problem. Stopping early is a good result: it saves your money and your time.

Questions people ask

How long does it take to check a business idea?

A first check can take one or two weeks of evenings: a few hours of research, 10 short talks and one small test. That is much less than the time a failed launch costs.

Do I need money to check an idea?

No. Talking to people is free. A one-page website or a post in a local group can be free too. Spend money only when people have shown they want it.

What if someone steals my idea?

Most people are busy with their own work. Talking to people gives you far more than it risks, because their answers show you what to build.

Is a free AI check enough?

No. An AI check is a fast first look that points out weak spots and what to test. Real customers decide in the end. That is why every TheIdeaToCode report ends with real-world steps.
